Menton/French Riviera V

We (Patrick and Marlene joined us) had an early start today and made for Cannes via train and then the island of Saint Honorat which is the home to a working monastery. It is a gorgeous island and we walked around all of it. For some reason I thought Cannes was more of an industrial city which it is definitely not. The photo below doesn’t nearly do the city justice.

The Lisle de Saint Honorat has a long history and the abbey (Abbaye de Lerins) dates back to the 11th century. We toured the abbey which also served as a fortification during Napoleon’s reign. As we walked around the island we also swam in the sea which was great since it was hot. Below is a view from our swimming spot.

Here is the old abbey/fortification.

A new abbey was built and it currently houses 20 monks. This photo was taken from the tower of the old abbey.

We left the island and headed back to Cannes where we took another swim and headed back to Menton. Another late dinner and a movie with M. Rizo, “A Pocketful of Miracles.” Below is a photo of us taken by our guide of the old abbey.
